Kiwanis Learns about “ADEPT”

At the weekly club luncheon on Tuesday, December 15th, the Kiwanis Club was treated to a motivational presentation by Ralph Yoder (shown at right), Intergovernmental Liaison, District Three, Florida Department of Transportation, that included a seasonal basis about Rudolph (“The Red Nosed Reindeer”).  Yoder based his talk on the word “adept” and how the letters are representative of how Kiwanis youth programs help prepare students for the future.

The key words are:

“A” = Available when needed.

“D” = Determined to deliver with perseverance in the face of obstacles.

“E” = Equipped with the necessary tools and experience.

“P” = Prepared to perform when needed.  When opportunity arrives, it’s too late to start preparing.

“T” = Tale to be told.  There is a history of the events that can be related afterwards to help others.

Yoder referenced how Rudolph (“The Red Nosed Reindeer”) was a great seasonal example in that he was available, determined to perform in the face of jeering from the other reindeer, equipped uniquely to lead the team, prepared when opportunity arrived, and his story serves as an example to others.

His point was that Kiwanis supports numerous programs throughout Washington County that help youth become “ADEPT” for future challenges.  Yoder also related some life experiences where he was able to apply the concept while growing-up in Washington County and later with his experiences at the University of Florida and his working career.

Club members were also informed by Annual Fruit Sale Chair Steve Mason that over 900 boxes of fruit had been unloaded from a semi-trailer earlier in the day, so members needed to pick-up their orders in the next 24 hours for delivery to customers.

The Kiwanis Club of Chipley has been providing support to youth oriented events and programs for 68 years and last year supported 36 organizations throughout the county.  The club meets Tuesdays at Pattillo’s Restaurant in the middle of the Washington-Holmes County Technical Center (WHTC) at Noon.   For an invitation to lunch, contact any Kiwanian or call Mark Collins, Membership Chairperson, at (850) 258-9453.
