With
a shotgun start at 8AM, the 2009 Marvin Engram
Memorial Kiwanis Golf Tournament at Sunny Hills Golf
& County Club, got
off to a fast start as carts and teams scattered
across the course to find their tee-off starting
position. Under perfectly blue skies, the 18 teams
that signed to play found a course in superior
condition after major landscaping work just
completed on Thursday.
After
playing the 18 holes, the golfers were treated to a
light lunch in the Sunny Hills Grill, followed by
the announcement of team scores and awarding of
prizes. Tournament Chair Colby Peel had arranged
sufficient prizes so that almost every player and
team won something. Mrs. Elaine Engram was present
to help with awards and spoke to the crowd briefly
about her late husband Marvin’s 37 years in Kiwanis,
and his well known hobby of golf. She was
accompanied by a daughter, Leslie Adams, son-in-law
Dwight Adams, and friends Jewell Smith and Nancy
Low.
Leading off the awards was a presentation by
Tournament Chair Colby Peel for the worst score to
the team of Waylon Fulford, Darrin Wall, and Matt
Walton. Reference to the posted team scores
indicated that there were no other teams close to
the score achieved by this team.

On the
other end of the scale, the overall best score was
achieved by the team of Ronnie McDaniel, Randy Peel,
and Fred Peel.
Second
best score was recorded by the team of Charley
Locke, David Phillips, and Mike Welch.
A tie
for third best score was between the team of Jason
Jenkins, Alan Kaufman, and Bill Thomley, and the
team of Walt Cadwell, Jimmy Register, and George
Alexander.
A
total of 3 teams tied at fourth best score between
the team of Brad Smedberg, Mike Hatton, and Scott
Yon, plus the team of Euless Sheffield, Jaba
Jackson, and Marcus Mallet, and the team of Sharon
Deal, Bob Deal and Donnie duce.
Fifth
place was held by the team of Will Taylor, Willbur
Brininger, and Kyle Bush.

There
were sufficient prizes donated by a variety of
businesses from Washington County, Bay County, and
Dothan, AL so that tied teams could be awarded
equivalent prizes.
In
addition to the golf team prizes, a drawing was held
for numbered tickets that were issued when team
members purchased “Mulligans” in advance of play to
offset a “bad” shot on the course. A “Mulligan” is
a “do over” to hopefully improve the hole score and
there are several entertaining stories about the
name history dating from the 1920’s to 1940’s.
