Chipley Kiwanis Club
Updated on Youth
Clubs Planning and the Chamber Outdoor Expo -
November 2, 2010

Chipley,
FL,
Tuesday, November 2, 2010. At the weekly club
luncheon on Tuesday, November 2nd, Kiwanis had a
multi-part program oriented to plans by its direct
sponsored youth clubs and the Chamber of Commerce
planning for the Outdoor Expo November 20th and
21st.
Leading off the
program was a summary of CHS Key Club plans this
school year for community service projects. The
presentation was made by Michael Pritchard of the
Key Club assisted by Robin Harr, Joshua Steverson,
and Allie Rudd. The students were introduced by
Cindy Johnson-Brown, the Kiwanis Club liaison to
Chipley High School.
Next, Brittany
Shamburger from the VHS Key Club reviewed plans for
her club during the next several months that will
benefit the communities where Vernon students live.
Joey Tharp, the Kiwanis liaison to Vernon High
School introduced Brittany.

The Key Clubs in high
schools provide the opportunity for students to run
their own club service projects with the help of a
faculty advisor and a liaison from the local Kiwanis
Club. Key Clubs are self sustaining as they raise
money through their projects that support the club
and provide for donations back to the community.
The student officers are accountable for club
operations and gain valuable and practical
leadership and management experience. Builders
Clubs are for middle school students and operate
much like Key Clubs, but with more supervision and
mentoring to prepare the members for greater
responsibilities as they become Key Clubbers in high
school. K-Kids are for elementary ages and are
basically dependent upon adult leadership and
supervision while they gain experience with concepts
for community service and individual responsibility
while supporting club goals.
Kiwanian Vickie
Williams provided a brief summary of plans by the
Builders Club at RMS, and Jan Page reviewed plans
for the K-Kids club at KMS, which currently has
about 25 4th graders and is new this year. Kiwanian
Pat Williams is Chair of the Sponsored Youth
committee that coordinates the student clubs.
Nicole
Barefield and Ted Everett, representing the Chamber
of Commerce, provided a summary of the plans for the
2nd Annual Outdoor Expo to be held at the Ag Center
November 20th and 21st, a Friday and Saturday.
Based upon the highly successful initial Expo last
year, the number of activities have been expanded
with a focus on all types of outdoor activities.
Ted Everett stressed that all activities are
designed to highlight the “balance in nature” with
the interactive relationships between animals,
plants, weather, climate, and humans.
There are
“pre-Expo” activities already underway with the
Photo Contest, Taxidermy Contest, and the before
course on-line work needed for the Florida Hunter
Safety Course and Concealed Weapons Course.
Enrollment for courses is limited with additional
information at
www.wcexpo.org, or from
the Chamber at
638-4157. Tickets
are available on-line or at the gate at $5.00 per
adult and kids 12 and under free. Everyone
attending is also encouraged to bring 1 can of food
that will be contributed to local food banks after
the weekend.
The Kiwanis Club of
Chipley has been providing support to youth oriented
events and programs for 70 years and last year
supported 31 organizations throughout the county.
Next on the fund
raising schedule will be the heavily attended Marvin
Ingram Memorial Kiwanis Golf Tournament on Saturday,
November 6th at the Sunny Hills Golf Course. Also
the annual fruit sale will be from now through
December 7th with delivery around December 17th.
This year the club has also added a gourmet 3 pound
mixed nut item in a designer tin with no peanuts,
and these will be available from merchant displays
as well as from Kiwanis members.
The club meets
Tuesdays at Pattillo’s Restaurant in the middle of
the Washington-Holmes County Technical Center (WHTC)
at Noon. For an invitation to lunch, contact any
Kiwanian or call David Solger, Membership
Chairperson, at (850) 638-1276.
