Chipley Kiwanis Club Hears From American Legion Post #241, Tuesday June 30, 2009

The Chipley Kiwanis Club heard from Guy Edwards from American Legion Post #241 in Sneads, Florida, about the military honor guard detail at that Post.  The only organization to be fully certified to conduct military funeral services in the area, the detachment has 16 members, most between the ages of 70 and 80.

A former Sheriff’s Office Deputy and City Police Officer, Edwards proudly explained the service provided by his detail, which they offer, free of charge, in Northwest Florida, Southeast Alabama and Southwest Georgia.  The Honor Guard members personally absorb all hard costs of the detail such as uniforms, equipment and travel expenses.

Edwards explained that the military does not offer a full military honors burial unless the deceased is either retired military or a field-grade officer, but the Sneads American Legion Honor Guard offers the honor to anyone who has served in the military, regardless of length of enlistment.  For more information about the American Legion or to join American Legion Post #241 call Guy Edwards at 850-593-6877.

The Chipley Kiwanians also met the incoming Lieutenant Governor for Division 2A, Wesley Stucki, who will hold the Division 2A Lieutenant Governorship for 2009-10.
