Kiwanis  Works At PALS Park For Baseball Season Opening - April 15, 2011

The Kiwanis Club of Chipley provided staffing for the Concession Stand at PALS Park for the opening of Little League and T-ball Season on Saturday, April 9th.  As it has done for several years, Kiwanis members helped with the operation of the Concession Stand as a service project.  Funds from the Concession Stand operations go to benefit the facilities.  Kiwanian Vickie Williams serves on the committee that works on behalf of the leagues using the fields to augment the City of Chipley to provide the best possible facilities for baseball and softball youth sports.

Working on Saturday were Kiwanians Vickie Williams, Dell Corbin, Paul Goulding, Laura Joiner, Garrett Martin, Missie Finch, Vince Spencer, and Jim Town.  Debbie Goulding also assisted the group.

Dell Corbin and Garrett Martin performed the “chef” duties by operating the gas grill and preparing the always delicious hamburgers and hot dogs, plus the preparation of French fries.  Since Saturday turned-out to be the hottest day so far this year, their contribution in the sun was greatly appreciated by those working in the concession stand.

Due to the heat of the day, Missie Finch was very busy throughout the games making the Snow Cone cups with a multitude of flavors.  There is no estimate of the pounds of ice she crushed, but at times the operation required 2 and 3 people to keep up with demand.

Kiwanis throughout the year has community work days where members perform hands-on such as upgrading the landscaping at K.M. Smith Elementary School, slicing melons at the Watermelon Festival for free servings to anyone willing to wait in a short line, the annual work day at PALS Park, and other projects.  Work days are in addition to holding the annual fund raising events such as the Dinner Theatre, Pancake Breakfast, Holiday Fruit Sale and Marvin Engram Memorial Golf Tournament.

The Kiwanis Club of Chipley has been providing support to youth oriented events and programs for 70 years and last year supported 31 organizations throughout the county.
